The security forces were in for a pleasant surprise yesterday when a former Lashkar terrorist, Majid Khan walked into a local security camp to turn himself in in hope of starting afresh.
The surrender has been a result of the consistent effort by his friends and family especially his parents in convincing him of seeing the truth of the matter and give a life marred by violence and regret. The once-aspiring footballer is hoping to turn over a fresh page in his life and get back to academics and sports as soon as possible.
In a joint press conference held by GOC Victory Force and the Inspector General of Police, the officials confirmed the fact that prolonged efforts to convince the misguided youngster to return to the mainstream and focus on more constructive aspects of life. Commenting on the voluntary surrender by Majid Khan, the General stated
" We would like to use this surrender as an example to other youngsters that we will help you with rehabilitation and sensitisation so that every surrendered can live a respectable life with no threat of any harassment from the establishment. We are here to help and will continue to encourage families to convince their sons to shun violence and lead good lives."
The IGP too expressed hope for the valley and reiterated the point by adding that the state will help all such people in all ways possible. We will provide Majid too with all the resources which will help him live his dream of excelling in sports and academics.
"It makes more sense if people shun violence and focus on academics and their business. After all it is always the family which suffers the most in such cases. "
Both the officials heartily congratulated the role played by the family, friends and social media in bringing back the forlorn terrorist back to mainstream society.
When probed by the media regarding the security establishments commitment to help waylaid youngsters the IGP quoted yesterday's example when the security forces rescued a terrorist who had opened fire on one of their own and evacuated him to the hospital which eventually saved his life. "What more proof do you need of the sincerity of our troops. "
The officials also confirmed that Majid has made initial contact with his family and will soon be joining them to lead a normal life.
