In a progressive move by the Centre, a law to ban the practice of Triple Talaq is likely to be taken up in the Winter Session of Parliament.
The Centre is all set to take the matter of Triple Talaq forward and is considering bringing about a suitable legislation or amending existing penal provisions which will make Triple Talaq as an offence. The move comes merely two months after the Supreme Court struck down the controversial practice.
In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court in August struck down the Triple Talaq practice in a 3:2 judgment. CJI also held that Triple Talaq is an integral part of Muslim Law and has issued directions to the Union Government to consider a legislation. The Chief Justice of India had asked Union Government to bring legislation in 6 months. A five-judge bench pronounced the verdict.
