Even though petrol engine powered cars are regaining their popularity, those people who clock high monthly kilometres still prefer a diesel engined car. Therefore, the manufacturers try hard that their diesel cars extract the best out of every drop of diesel.

If fuel economy is high on your priority, here is our list of the diesel cars you must consider buying.

The third generation of Maruti Dzire has ditched the Swift moniker. It has grown in size, looks much more proportionate, and offers a lot of space inside the cabin. The Fiat sourced Multi-jet diesel is carried over from the previous two generations of the car but is a lot more fuel efficient now. The available 5-speed AMT gearbox doesn’t compromise on economy either.

 Maruti Suzuki Baleno – 27.39km/l

The premium hatchback from Maruti looks handsome, comes well equipped, and offers good performance thanks to its low kerb weight. Lower weight also means that the Maruti Baleno is very fuel efficient. The cabin of the car offers good space for its segment.

Engine: 1.05-lire, in-line 3-cylinder turbo diesel

Transmission: 5-speed manual
