Volvo is entering the premium small SUV segment for the first time with the upcoming XC40.

Volvo is working hard towards completely revising its product portfolio, and therefore, the company seems to be on a launching spree. Not long after internationally unveiling the new generation XC60, the Chinese owned Swedish brand is all set to enter a new segment.

Volvo has released an official teaser video of the upcoming XC40 – its entry level SUV which will slot below the XC60 in the company’s line-up. This means that the upcoming small premium SUV will lock horns with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1, among many other globally.

The teaser however, focuses on the upcoming SUVs interiors, and the customization options which will be on offer. Volvo’s motivation behind such a move are elements such as  street fashion, city architecture, high-end designer goods, and pop culture. Volvo is surely targeting the younger crowd with this one.

The company claims that the XC40 takes Volvo Cars into new areas and allows its designers the freedom to create a car that brings a vibrancy, individuality and playfulness the small premium SUV segment currently lacks. The teaser hints that the colour palette available on the XC60 will be the most diverse on any Volvo yet, and the exterior and interior contrast colour options will be aplenty.

Volvo’s Vice President of Design, Robin Page, said, “Our customer research clearly showed that for the XC40 and for this segment, we needed a wider selection of colours and materials than we usually offer. As Volvo Cars has never designed a car like the XC40 before, we could start from scratch and give it energy and playfulness.”

Volvo teased the XC40 in 2016, in the form of the 40.1 concept (pictured above). The upcoming SUV is expected to be based on Geely’s Compact Modular Architecture Platform. Volvo officially claims that the XC40 is ‘set to be revealed shortly’.
