Onam is a traditional harvest festival celebrated to mark the homecoming of King Mahabali. 
It is the biggest festival of Kerala, celebrated in the first month of the Malayalam Calendar.
The beginning of Onam is marked by a grand procession or Athachamayam.
A procession of elephants clothed in finery is a common feature of Onam celebrations in Kerala.
People decorate the area in front of their houses with Pookalam to welcome King Mahabali.
It is a ten-day festival and each day has its own importance. One of the traditional dances of Kerala performed during Onam is the Thiruvathira Kali.
