Volvo XC40 Leaked Ahead Of Global Debut

The XC40 will serve as the gateway to Volvo’s SUV lineup, and will lock horns with Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

A few months back, Volvo officially teased the XC40 SUV, by flaunting its youth specific features, and a clutter free interior. The company had not revealed any exterior details of the upcoming small luxury SUV, but it was highly speculated that it would draw its design inspiration from the 40.1 concept, which Volvo revealed in 2016.

In a recent development, the Hungarian arm of the Swedish carmaker, by mistake, revealed the XC40 in an official trailer - just before its world premiere on September 21. The trailer of the SUV went live on Volvo Hungary’s website, and was pulled down quickly thereafter.

The overall design of the XC40, indeed, echos a lot of what was seen on the 40.1 concept. The front reflects Volvo’s latest design philosophy, along with the characteristic ‘Thor’s hammer’ DRLs. At the rear, a pronounced shoulder line, accompanied by vertical LED tail lamps complete the look. Overall, the XC40 fits perfectly in Volvo’s new SUV lineup - and indeed looks like a younger sibling of the latest gen XC90 and XC60.

The story continues on the inside as well. The leaked images show a centre console inspired by bigger Volvos, which goes in line with the company's claim of a clutter free interior. It is safe to assume that the large tablet-style screen - that dominates the centre console, will make up for the lack of physical buttons on the dashboard - by offering virtual controls.

The pictures also give a slight glimpse of the SUV’s instrument cluster, which in typical 2017 fashion - is all digital. It is quite likely that virtual driver’s cockpit will be offered as an option on the Volvo XC40.

Based on Geely’s all-new Compact Modular Architecture, the XC40 is expected to debut with a T5 petrol-hybrid variant - thus staying true to Volvo’s commitment to an electrified automotive future. More details will surface once the SUV is revealed in all its glory.
